Introduction

The Center for Entrepreneurship will offer two seminars for the residential MBA program in Fall 2014.  The thematic seminars will focus on venture creation and on venture finance.

Seminar 1: Venture Creation (Nov. 14)

The purpose of the venture creation seminar is to introduce MBA students to the initial venture creation process. Students will learn experientially by developing an initial idea, and considering the business model using the business model canvas. The session will be hands-on with the students engaged in learning by doing.

Learning outcomes:

  • Acquire useful tools to develop and assess entrepreneurial ideas
  • Develop team-working skills involved in idea assessment and business model creation
  • Understand the business model canvas and its role in idea assessment
  • Use the business model canvas to conceptualize and assess an actual business model

Seminar 2: Venture Finance (Nov. 21)

The purpose of this seminar is to introduce MBA students to the different forms of venture finance and how they can be used to start and grow a new business.  Students will learn from “authentic experts” through a series of guest lectures, interviews, panels and question and answer sessions.  The session will be interactive.

Learning outcomes

  • Understand the different forms of venture finance
  • Explore and appreciate how different forms of finance can be used to start and grow a venture
  • Gain knowledge about the criteria that investors look for when assessing a venture idea for investment
  • Appreciate the key factors that make up a good pitch for investment in a venture
